Health, Safety, and Welfare Support Stories

Below is a collection of stories from people who Scottish Hazards' have helped through their workplace health, safety, and welfare issues.

Helen, Legal Cashier - Highlands

"I contacted Scottish Hazards a few weeks ago when asked to return to my place of work, rather than continuing to work from home. I was very concerned about this as I knew that very little had been done to improve cleaning standards or to protect staff from COVID-19 at my place of work. Ian Tasker promptly responded to my request for advice and clearly outlined my rights and position. Having previously spent a sleepless night debating whether I should just accept my employer's request or make a stand, in order to protect the health of myself and my family, it was a huge relief to be given clear information and support. Once supplied with that information I was able to make an informed decision. I can highly recommend Scottish Hazards' services and hope that they are able to continue offering their advice and services, improving workplace health and safety ."

Robert - South Ayrshire

Robert was employed by a meat processing company in South Ayrshire and had only worked for the employer for a few weeks. He contacted Scottish Hazards in August 2020 as he had been escorted from the premises after raising COVID security concerns during a staff meeting. Due to his service, he would not normally have legal recourse through an employment tribunal. However, as the dismissal was because of raising health and safety concerns any unfair dismissal attracts day-one rights. Our legal advisers supported the client with an Employment Tribunal claim. The employer refused conciliation but settled in advance of a hearing.

Donna - North Lanarkshire

“My sister was being bullied at work to the stage her mental health was so poor we all had concerns for her welfare. Her employer, a well-known high-street food retailer was being totally unsympathetic and, in our view, contributed to her declining health by taking four months to respond to her grievance. At the same time, they were pushing for my sister to return to work or face sickness absence procedures and possible dismissal. Ian Tasker from Scottish Hazards, working with their legal advisers, managed to secure a settlement that allowed my sister to leave this employer and focus on her recovery. The services provided by Scottish Hazards are invaluable for all employees in workplaces where trade unions are not recognised and where employment practices exploit lack of effective representation. We cannot thank them enough”.
