Occupational health and safety charity Scottish Hazards have expressed concern at figures released today by the Health and Safety Executive showing 12 more people were killed in incidents investigated by the HSE in 2018/19 compered to the previous year.
Ian Tasker from Scottish Hazards said
“It is astonishing that the HSE can witness a 70% increase in work related fatal injuries from 17 to 29 and explain this away as a possible natural variation in the figures and does not indicate any “statistically significant change”.
We disagree, this is a significant increase and once again we have to remind everyone this does not include deaths at work investigated by other regulators, those killed in road traffic incidents occurring in the course of their work, those who are so pushed to the depths of despair by work they take their own lives and thousands who lose their lives every year as a result of occupational diseases and cancers such as mesothelioma.
“It is unacceptable that more and more families are facing the knock on the door that no one ever expects; the police to say their loved one will not be returning from work”.
“Deregulation and health and safety hysteria has to end, work should be good for people, it should provide financial security for workers and their families in fair, healthy and safe working environments, it should not kill people”.
