Scottish Hazards 24th Annual Conference

Our 24th annual conference was held on 27th February 2025 at the City of Glasgow College, Riverside Campus.  Thank you to everyone who attended

Summary

The 24th Annual Scottish Hazards Conference brought together 80 Health and Safety activists from across Scotland to consider the questions:

  1. Is our H&S system fit for purpose?
  2. How do we see Health and Safety in Scotland’s Future?

Delegates spent a day hearing from experts on different issues and sharing their own experience and expertise in interactive workshops.

Workshops

The Rise and Fall of Robens - the Health and Safety at Work Act is 50 years old, has it stood the test time?
Facilitated by Ian Tasker
This workshop will examine this question and what, if any changes are required to ensure or laws protect workers in modern workplaces, those in precarious employment, workers in non-unionised workplaces and others exposed to risk in modern workplaces.

Mental Health in the Work Place, a Trade Union Response
Facilitated by John Brown
This will be about the TU activities undertaken by the BAE Systems Shop stewards and Safety Reps and later Mental Health first aiders. I will also discuss the population wide mental health stats; a bit about Suicide prevention; the role of HR and Line Management and the use of legalisation i.e. HSEs Stress Buster Campaign and the requirements of the Employer as outlined in Management Regs

Work Related Suicide 
Facilitated by Simon Walker
This workshop discusses how the workplace can play a role in the recognition & prevention of, and potential recovery following, suicidal action. We will be discussing successful intervention programmes such as Mental Health Champions, as well as looking at ways to improve individual and company wide employee mental health, suicidal prevention, and signposting to support services.

Toxics Use Reduction
Facilitated by Andrew Watterson and Eurig Scandrett
Find out how toxics like forever chemicals and endocrine disruptors can mess with your body at work and beyond and discuss what can be done about them.

International Memorial Day – Maximising its Impact IWMD
Facilitated by Louise Adamson and Billy McEwan
A workshop exploring the current activities surrounding IWMD and discussing ways to maximise its impact through out unions, workplaces and communities.
